Babel

C. Gijsen

Babel

I was in Babel, literally raising walls
of grating gutturals and monosyllables
which dully disintegrated in the grammar -
am I still making sense reader? -,  and at the

top of my tower all sentences and sense were
blown about across this desert where only the
deaf survived; I had to steal each and every
line roughly plundering the book of all beginning.

Unbelieving, I prayed to the god of the word,
begged for listeners, any sullen audience,
and an answer to prop up my edifice,

still secure it against decay with vowels,
a stony syntax and platitudes, but my tongue was
silenced by the dumb cacophony of hubris.
